NILD™ Educational Therapy is a program for students with learning difficulties.

A student with a learning disability may have difficulty with sight words, decoding or recalling the correct formations for letters and words. Perhaps her short-term memory is not strong enough for her to attach new information to what she already knows.

Maybe his ability to process new information makes it hard to listen in class so he is very slow to complete tasks. Handwriting could be difficult, as well as speed at math. Perhaps the student does not use the lines on his paper properly, including large gaps or numbers and letters squished together. Maybe the student substitutes letters and numbers or they are innacurate.

These may all be signs of a learning disability, and a reason to investigate what help NILD™ Educational Therapy could be.

* What defines an NILD™ Educational Therapist?

An NILD™ Educational Therapist holds a bachelor's (or higher) degree in education or a related field and has been trained by NILD to work with students who have learning disabilities.
The therapist may work in a school setting, as a private practitioner or through a Discovery Program, Inc. http://discoveryprogram-inc.com/

As of January 1, 2007 all practicing educational therapists and parent educational therapists need to be registered and licensed in order to use NILD® materials.

An NILD™ Registered Educational Therapist either possesses all three levels of certification or is working toward full NILD™ certification (CET).

* How much NILD™ Educational Therapy costs

The cost of NILD™ Educational Therapy is priced at $45 per session and requires a yearly commitment of two 80 minute sessions each week. Parents are guaranteed 62 sessions/year minimum.

Payment options may be discussed.

A $100 materials fee is also payable at the beginning of each year.

* Who can benefit from NILD™ Educational Therapy?

You may benefit from NILD™ Educational Therapy if you have difficulty putting your ideas on paper, your handwriting is poor, spelling and punctuation are troublesome or you have trouble with short or long term memory. Organizational weaknesses, reading and math issues or general frustration with academics may also indicate the need for therapy.

Many students of NILD™ Educational Therapy have:
Nonverbal Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Disorder, Aspergers, developmental delays, or have some form of brain damage as a result of a stroke or other injury.

* How is NILD™ Therapy different from tutoring?

A tutor helps students understand and learn new material and skills based on specific class work and assignments. Tutoring is subject-based and helps with recalling facts.

Educational Therapy desires to instill confidence and competence by strengthening and building the foundational walls of perception and/or cognition. By strengthening and training the areas where weaknesses present themselves, learning becomes more fluid and efficient. An Educational Therapist builds a program for their student, paving the way for them to learn to think independently.

The skills taught with NILD™ Educational Therapy are not the same as "cramming for an exam"; therapy takes the time necessary to help the student in the areas he or she most needs help, promotes self-monitoring skills, instills confidence and fosters independence, equipping him or her for success in life.

* Four Distinctives of NILD™ Educational Therapy

1. Instruction is both explicit and intentional. The therapist plays a big role as a facilitator of learning. Therapy is also interactive rather than a computer-based program or seatwork alone. Therapy teaches HOW to learn, not simply what to learn. It also aids the student in attaching new information to what is already known, building the foundation needed to support academics.

2. Therapy employs inductive reasoning and Socratic questioning. An NILD™ Educational Therapist does not merely say "that is wrong", but, rather, "tell me another way you could work that out", asking questions that stimulate thinking. By probing further, the student learns to think more abstactly, making that "ah-ha!" discovery on his or her own.

3. Through guided practice and systematic feedback, the student is taught the skills needed to make the jump from short-term to long-term memory, instilling confidence. Therapy strengthens both cognitive (the way we think, reason or remember things) and perceptual (the way we recognize and interpret things from our memory) deficits which lead to breakdowns in academics. Students participate actively, defending and using what they learn while receiving constant feedback on their progress as the therapist is always present.

4. By self-regulation and transfer, the things NILD™ Educational Therapy teaches, stick. Students are responsible to memorize, be motivated to learn, do all assignments and be organized. These skills are transferred as the student discovers how to be successful not only academically, but also in regular life as the techniques and strategies for learning apply across the board.

Search & Teach© http://www.searchandteach.com/ is an early intervention program developed to meet the educational needs of young learners before they experience the frustration of learning failure.

This differs from NILD™ Educational Therapy, which was designed to help students who have documented learning difficulties, and in many cases have already experienced frustration and
failure in the regular classroom.

SEARCH is a 20-minute individual test designed to identify 5 and 6-year-olds who are vulnerable to learning difficulty, and to provide profiles of individual strengths and weaknesses in the readiness skills necessary for reading success.

TEACH is a program of 55 learning activities called tasks, carefully designed to address the needs revealed by a SEARCH screening.
TEACH is offered to individuals in a one-on-one setting, allowing the student to move through the tasks needed at the rate of their own development.
